Sun Ra and Space is The Place!

WEEK 4 RESPONSE

The chapter "Space is the Place" focuses on Sun Ra's concept of outer space as a central aspect of his work. Sun Ra believed that space was a place of liberation and transcendence, a place where one could escape the oppression and injustice of Earth and find a new and better way of life. He saw himself as an extraterrestrial being who had come to Earth to bring a message of hope and change.

Some interesting points about Sun Ra's concept of space and its role in his work include:

- Sun Ra's vision of space was informed by his interest in science fiction, ancient civilizations, and black cultural traditions. He believed that the vastness of space was a place where all of these interests could collide and he could carry out his full creative vision.

- He believed that space was a place of infinite possibility, where the laws of physics and reality were different and one could create new forms of music, art, and society.

- Sun Ra's music and performances were an attempt to bring his vision of space to life. These performances often incorporated futuristic sounds and costumes, and often took place in carefully planned and otherworldly settings.

- His ideas about space have been influential in various cultural fields, including music, film, art, and science fiction, and have been extraordinarily influential in the field of Afrofuturism.

"Space is the Place" provides a detailed examination of Sun Ra's concept of space and its role in his work, and offers insights into the development of Afrofuturism as a cultural and artistic movement as well as Sun Ra's influence.

  1. I too found that Sun Ra saw space as a place of endless opportunity and possibility, and if we were all to leave our lives here on Earth, we would all be alien beyond this place. If we humans were to be put in a completely foreign environment like space or another planet, our differences would seem far smaller, and those who hold any prejudice, unless they are a lost cause, will see how we are all human at the end of the day.
