Sun Ra's Legacy

Sun Ra is an important and crucial figure in the jazz and electronic music industry and has influenced countless musicians. He was one of the first jazz musicians to incorporate electronic music into his discography. His unique qualities and innovations have brought a new perspective to the world of jazz. Science fiction, spirituality, and Afrofuturism are elements that have heavily influenced his work and are what make his work so distinctive. His music was intended to align with people’s souls who were marginalized on earth. In "Space is the Place", Ra was asked by Jimmy why everyone on earth seems so depressed to which he replied: “the people have no music that is in coordination with their spirits, because of this, they are out of tune with the universe.” His goal was to create music that could uplift people and lead them to a higher state of consciousness.

One of the most significant contributions Sun Ra made to music was the creation of a new style of jazz that blended different genres and incorporated elements of African music, avant-garde jazz, and free improvisation. This style is what makes him such a prominent figure and why he is so highly regarded today. His music was experimental and challenging, but it also had a distinctive rhythm and melody that drew audiences in. Sun Ra's impact on music went beyond just his unique sound. He also challenged conventional ideas about race and identity in the music industry. He believed that black musicians should have more creative control over their music and should not be limited by white-dominated record labels and industry norms. This is what was primarily shown throughout Space is the Place which illustrated Ra’s philosophies regarding music. The white-dominated society was one of the driving forces for Ra’s ideology of escaping earth to somewhere that is not mainly controlled by white people.

Sun Ra's unique expressions of black importance interwoven with science fiction produces an excellent film that showcases the complete and honest philosophies into a true work of art which has impacted the jazz music industry.

  1. I really enjoyed your response and your dissection of Sun Ra as an artist. What I really enjoyed is how you emphasize his contributions to music and his unique style of Jazz. I found this interesting because I think afrofuturism is more often looked at from a narrative standpoint, usually through writing, film, and other visual art forms. You point out how Sun Ra "believed that black musicians should have more creative control over their music and should not be limited by white-dominated record labels and industry norms," which I think really gives a new form to afrofuturism in music.
