Why Space?

In the movie Space is the Place, I've noticed that they used a mix of cultures around the world to accomplish an outer world look. I see a lot of Egyptian-like pieces, makeup, and outfits. But they also have just a wide variety of genres throughout the movie. Such as classic rich jazz, and what I interpret as a boom box-looking (hip-hop) spaceship.

A question that is asked in Anthony Reeds, Sun Ra, and the Grammar article, is "Why Space?" He answers with there's no limit to who you can be, it's that blackness of space, and it is unclaimed. But I have my own ideas. To me, it seems as if space is just a concept only to be perceived by the Earth. If Earth isn't being compared to our black space then what does it mean to us? Space is this escape for black people but I haven't seen us go beyond us being perceived by the earth. I know we have more to learn and watch buts it is what I've noticed so far. For there to be new futurist content it is based on our past and what we have seen and know already.
