Agents of Change
The article "I want Black time travelers to be a threat to the status quo" by Sherronda J. Brown and the film See You Yesterday by Stefon Bristol both deal with the theme of time travel as a tool for Black liberation.
In the article, Brown discusses the potential of using time travel narratives to explore and subvert power dynamics and social inequalities. She argues that Black time travelers should be portrayed as agents of change and resistance against oppressive systems, rather than simply as victims or passive observers of history.
Similarly, See You Yesterday follows two Black teenage prodigies, C.J. and Sebastian, who invent a time machine in an effort to prevent the police shooting of C.J.'s brother. The film explores the consequences of altering the past, and the limitations of using time travel as a means of achieving justice in a society where systemic racism and violence against Black people are deeply entrenched.
Overall, both the article and the film emphasize the need for Black voices and perspectives in science fiction and time travel narratives and challenge the dominant narratives that perpetuate racism and inequality.
