Everything Leads Back to Enslavement.

 Steven Thrasher's article "Why Get Out Is the Best Movie Ever Made About American Slavery" takes Jordan Peele's horror film "Get Out" and reframes it as an afro-futurist commentary about slavery. While the film, even as a horror film, is undoubtedly sending a complex message about race, Thrasher does a graceful job at explaining what  exactly is going on.  The article highlights that rather than a horror movie, the way all the characters chase after the protagonist's body parts, it is a commentary about the horrors of enslavement. During the transatlantic slave trade millions of Africans were thrown overboard and senselessly killed and discrimination against black people (like police brutality) always seems to be overwhelmingly physical. In the film "Get Out" a man Chris and his girlfriend Rose go to stay with Rose's family for a weekend. On this weekend trip the family hosts, allegedly hosts, a party with family and friends. The "party" in question is a veiled auction for Chris as all the "partygoers" are really interested in a large scale experiment to live on by transplanting their consciousness into Black bodies. Thrasher points out that while this is scary it is hardly horror but the truth. As America functions off of Black accomplishment, it simultaneously demeans them and fails to see them as human, or worthy of human treatment. He highlights the way that Rose and her family bring him home just to sell him to their other rich white friends is hardly a coincidence but a direct parallel of antebellum South. 

By throwing this cruel display of racism in a more modern setting both Peele and Thrasher nod to the ridiculousness of racism and how wanting Black bodies or Black things without respecting them is truly an act of racism rather than praise. 

Thrasher writes about "Get Out" and highlights the genius of the film as it prods white liberals and their more overtly racist white counterparts alike. Thrasher praises the genius of the film for what it truly is.
