THRASHER
Steven Thrasher’s review of Get Out offers an insightful perspective on the film and it’s relation to American chattel slavery. It describes white peoples obsession with the idea of the black body and all of the perks that come with it. However, blackness itself is not idealized and is often demonized. Therefore, white people start to believe that they can utilize black bodies better than actual black people. In the film this is shown through medical procedures that allows for white consciousness to be paced into a black body and piloted buy it. In reality, this is seen through the constant policing of black peoples, from hair styles to speech. Slavery itself was the control of black bodies.
Thrasher’s review is one that should be read by all. I say this because they show actual anger and displeasure overtly, in regards to racism and such. This “in your face” attitude is one that I believe many black people should take up when it comes to discussing white complacency and racism. For too long have white people felt comfortable removing themselves from these types of conversations. Refusing to acknowledge their roles in the greater systems that continue to oppress. Being uncomfortable is exactly what they need to feel in order for anything to change. It’s interesting, because part of the film is about catering to white people and encouraging their delusions. This review however, does the opposite by calling out white institutions and their obsession with black people. For people who spit out hate and bigotry so much, its very peculiar how much they actually spend time fantasizing about being black.

Great (and chilling) overview of this article. The way white people fetishize black bodies but blackness itself is demonized is beyond hypocrisy. I would call it delusional (because it is) but I think this type of thinking goes further than delusion and is more malicious. It is hard to generalize but I am glad we have authors and directors like the ones we have looked at in this class to help shed light on these issues.
