See You Yesterday: A Fresh Take on Time Travel

See You Yesterday, directed by Stefon Bristol, is a refreshing take on a relatively unused narrative, time travel. While we have all seen examples of this in modern cinema, I’d argue that it’s not a regularly used genre, maybe because it’s relatively niche. The film takes on two distinct challenges, police brutality and unjust violence towards black people, and rewriting the narrative of time travel is generally a white theme. As I stated earlier, few movies take on the challenge of time travel because it was played out pretty in well with films like Back to the Future, The Butterfly Effect, Interstellar, etc. All of these films share something in common, a predominately white cast. This film switches that narrative to a predominately black cast which is exciting to change this, in my opinion, relatively drab narrative. See You Yesterday, manages to tackle modern issues like police brutality while exploring themes of race in this white-washed movie genre. Overall, while I’d say the film was not great, it manages to spark a conversation on these themes that most people leave untouched which is great.https://static01.nyt.com/images/2019/05/17/arts/17seeyouyesterday-2/merlin_154884237_2c0a8a4f-9a0b-460b-abbe-a57817293647-superJumbo.jpg
